Member Information

Welcome to your guide on what it means to be a member of The Fix It Group 23. This section outlines our structure, legal status, and your role and responsibilities as a valued member of our community.

Organisational Structure

The Fix It Group 23 is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit community group focused on:

  • Environmental sustainability

  • Skill-sharing through repair activities

  • Promoting social connection at community repair events

We are governed by a Leadership Team (Board of Trustees), elected annually by the membership. This team oversees:

  • Operations

  • Compliance with safety and safeguarding policies

  • Financial management

Key leadership roles include:

  • Chairperson

  • Secretary

  • Treasurer

  • Health & Safety Officer

Legal Status

The Fix It Group 23 is an unincorporated association. This means:

  • We are not a registered charity or company

  • We do not have separate legal personality

  • We are governed by a written constitution

  • We operate as a collective of individuals working toward shared goals

We cannot enter contracts or own property as a group. Instead, individual trustees are legally responsible for any agreements or commitments made on behalf of the group.

We are not registered with Companies House or the Charity Commission because our annual income is below the required threshold.

What It Means to Be a Member (Volunteer)

All members of The Fix It Group 23 are volunteers.

Membership means more than just helping out — it involves shared responsibility for upholding our values and complying with safety, safeguarding, and conduct standards.

By becoming a member, you:

  • Support the group’s aims and take part in activities

  • Complete a required induction covering safety, safeguarding, inclusion, and data responsibilities

  • Follow all relevant policies and procedures

  • Vote at the AGM and help shape the future of the group

You are expected to:

  • Participate safely and respectfully

  • Follow agreed guidance at events

  • Maintain confidentiality and data protection where required

  • Act in line with our code of conduct

As a member, you are responsible for your own actions. You may be personally liable if you:

  • Act unsafely or break group policies

  • Cause harm or loss through negligence

  • Handle personal data improperly

  • Commit unlawful or reckless acts while volunteering

You are not automatically protected from liability just by being a volunteer. This is why our induction, policies, and safety procedures are mandatory — to protect you, others, and the group.

Membership Terms

  • Membership is free

  • It is valid for three years

  • It may be renewed

  • Trustees may withdraw membership if a volunteer’s actions endanger others or compromise the group
