Volunteer with Us

Help repair items, reduce waste, support your community, and meet great people along the way.

Whether you’re skilled at repairing electrical items, handy with a sewing machine, great with people, or simply want to support local community events, there’s a place for you at The Fix It Group 23.

At The Heart: Our Volunteers

The Fix It Group 23 is powered entirely by volunteers.

From experienced repairers and organisers to hosts and front-of-house greeters, our volunteers are what make our Repair Cafés possible. Every event is built on teamwork, community spirit, and a shared belief that repairing is better than replacing.

We welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels. Some volunteers bring technical expertise, while others simply want to support their local community and make a difference.

Every volunteer receives a supportive onboarding and induction process to help them feel confident, informed, and ready to get involved.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to get involved with The Fix It Group 23.

Repair Volunteers

Repair Volunteers help assess, diagnose, and repair a wide range of household items brought into our Repair Cafés, including small electrical appliances, clothing, toys, clocks, and small household items. Volunteers work alongside visitors to help extend the life of everyday items and reduce waste wherever possible.

Front of House Volunteers

Front of House Volunteers welcome visitors to our Repair Cafés, support sign-in and registration, help manage forms and documentation, and create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for everyone attending our events.

Event Support Volunteers

Event Support Volunteers help coordinate and support the smooth running of our Repair Cafés by assisting with setting up and packing down events, organising tools and workspaces, supporting volunteers and visitors throughout the day, and helping maintain a safe, welcoming, and organised environment.

Additional Support Volunteers

Additional Support Volunteers provide additional expertise and behind-the-scenes support in areas such as electrical engineering, PAT testing, safeguarding, administration, social media, fundraising, event coordination, community engagement, and trustee leadership, helping strengthen, guide, and grow the organisation.

Our Volunteer Process

We aim to make volunteering with The Fix It Group 23 welcoming, straightforward, and supportive from the very beginning.

2.Initial Contact

Once we receive your enquiry, we’ll contact you with more information about volunteering opportunities, upcoming Repair Café events, and the next steps in the process.

1.Register Your Interest

Complete our Volunteer Interest Form and tell us a little about yourself, your interests, skills, and how you would like to get involved.

3.Observe a Repair Café

Prospective volunteers may be invited to attend one of our Repair Café events to observe how the group operates, meet the team, and gain a better understanding of the volunteer roles available.

4.Complete Your Induction

All volunteers complete an online induction covering areas such as health and safety, safeguarding, volunteer expectations, event procedures, equality and inclusion, and electrical safety awareness.

5.Start Volunteering

Once your induction has been completed, you’ll officially become part of The Fix It Group 23 volunteer team and can begin supporting our Repair Café events and community activities.

Electrical Repair Volunteers

Electrical repairs involve additional safety considerations. Volunteers wishing to work on electrical items follow an additional competency pathway that may include:

  • an initial skills conversation

  • observation or shadowing at a Repair Café

  • induction completion

  • PAT testing awareness

  • approval before working independently

This process helps ensure repairs are carried out safely and confidently.

Volunteer Capacity & Waiting List

To maintain a safe, supportive, and well-managed environment, The Fix It Group 23 operates with a maximum number of active volunteers.

If all volunteer spaces are currently filled, applicants will be added to our waiting list and contacted when suitable opportunities become available.

We genuinely appreciate every offer of support and look forward to welcoming new volunteers whenever space allows.
