World Environment Day 2025 Special Repair Café

This World Environment Day, we’re inviting you to do something simple but powerful — join us in celebrating the value of repair.

On Thursday 5th June, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, The Fix it Group 23 will be hosting a Special Edition Repair Café at the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre Venue (MMCV). This one-day event is part of a global movement to protect our planet, and it’s our local contribution to this year’s theme: Ending Plastic Pollution.

Plastic has become one of the most persistent and damaging pollutants on Earth, found in our oceans, soil, air, and even our food. But while the problem may be global, the solutions can begin right here at home — with choices that are personal, tangible, and achievable. Repair is one of those choices. By fixing what we already have, we reduce the demand for new plastic materials and help cut off waste before it begins.

This café will be a warm, welcoming space where our community can gather, share, and act. Local media will be onsite to help capture and spread the message — that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they come together with purpose.

A Community Event with Real Impact

Our volunteers will be ready to help with repairs to household items, textiles, tools, toys, and more. Every item that is restored extends its life and keeps it out of the waste stream. Every visitor who chooses repair over replacement helps push back against our throwaway culture. And every act of fixing becomes a quiet but powerful stand against unnecessary plastic use.

This event is a chance to reflect on what we consume, what we discard, and what we truly value. By taking part, you’re not only saving your favourite lamp or your old radio — you’re joining a movement that says, “We can do better. And we will.”

Restoring Stories, Not Just Stuff

For this event, we’re placing a special focus on sentimental items — the things that carry stories as well as function. Perhaps it’s a plastic toy passed down through generations, a broken blender that once belonged to your mum, or a beloved object you’ve never quite had the heart to part with. If it means something to you, it means something to us too.

We invite anyone with a meaningful item to get in touch with us in advance. Let us know what the item is, and why it matters to you. This helps us prepare and ensures that your story — and your repair — receives the time and care it deserves.

Of course, as always, walk-ins are warmly welcome. Whether or not you’ve booked ahead, you’ll be met with friendly faces and skilled hands.

Repairing as Environmental Action

Repair is not just a practical act. It’s a statement — one that pushes back against overproduction, overconsumption, and the pollution that follows. Much of the waste we generate is plastic-based, hidden in packaging, components, or entire products made to be discarded after a short life.

When you repair something, you extend its story. You keep it out of the landfill. You say no to the cycle of constant replacement. And you show others that there is an alternative — one rooted in care, creativity, and responsibility.

This World Environment Day is about rethinking our relationship with plastic. It’s about asking what we really need, and what we can do without. And most importantly, it’s about taking action. Repair is one of the simplest and most accessible ways to start.

We Hope You’ll Join Us

So come along. Bring something broken, something old, something important. Or simply come and see what it’s all about. There will be skilled volunteers, meaningful conversations, and the chance to take part in something that truly matters.

This is more than a repair session. It’s a gathering of people who care — about their belongings, their neighbours, and their world. It’s a reminder that the things we throw away are often still full of value. And it’s a space to prove that change begins not with grand gestures, but with small, thoughtful acts repeated again and again.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre on Thursday 5th June, from 9am to 1pm. Together, let’s mark World Environment Day not just with words, but with tools in our hands and a shared commitment in our hearts.
